Solomzi Moleketi
Solomzi is a South African painter. He obtained his BA Fine Arts at the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. While completing his bachelor's degree, Solomzi founded BLVCK BLOCK Art Development Program, which serves as a platform to empower young artists from across Southern Africa. He has also worked with the Thabo Mbeki Foundation in curating exhibitions and leading discussions surrounding South Africa's vibrant artistic world.
Through the creation of imagined landscapes, Solomzi narrates histories that humanity has been deprived of. The vastness of the landscapes rendered in his oeuvre forces the audience to contemplate the modern structures of our lives as the result of colonial imposition. While struggle and opposition seem to be at the crux of much of his work, Solomzi's heavy brush strokes and attention to colour imbue a sense of overall coherence and direction. Through its abstraction, his layered work fufils both a personal function as well as one that is profoundly forward looking and political.
Solomzi has previously been exhibited in Johannesburg. He was also the recipient of the Anya Millman Scholarship.
